Washed Rwanda, Sholi
About our Rwanda, Sholi Blend
This coffee originates from the Abateraninkunga ba Sholi ("Sholi") Cooperative in the Muhanga district of Rwanda's Southern Province. Established in 2008, Sholi is committed to producing high-quality coffee while fostering community development. The cooperative's name, meaning "Mutual Assistance," reflects its ethos of collaboration among members.
Originally stemming from the women's association "Kundwa," meaning "love" in Kinyarwanda, Sholi now boasts nearly half of its members as women, with two out of five board members being female. In 2016, Sholi received a grant to construct a community center and a regional health center, providing vital services such as blood tests, treatments for various ailments, and basic first aid. Betty, the head nurse, alongside other staff members, is exploring avenues to implement a nutrition and cooking program to address malnutrition in children under five years old, in addition to establishing public-health partnerships with neighboring clinics.
The cooperative obtained Fairtrade certification in 2015, Rainforest Alliance certification in 2016, and Organic certification in 2020. Through Fairtrade funds, members have initiated projects such as an apiary and the distribution of cows among members.
